A Tribute to a Trailblazer, Mentor, and Friend
By Kevin Conwell
🎾 Today, I had the honor of attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly rebuilt Judge Jean Murrell Capers Tennis Courts—a space that now shines even brighter in her legacy.
Judge Capers 💖 was the first woman elected to Cleveland City Council, a fierce advocate for justice, and a beloved friend of my mother. She was also a customer, and someone I had the incredible privilege of doing radio with—at the age of 104. Her voice was as sharp and passionate as ever, reminding us all that purpose doesn’t age. 👏
This investment isn’t just about tennis—it’s about preserving the legacy of a woman who broke barriers, uplifted communities, and inspired generations. These courts are a classroom for discipline, a stage for youth development, and a living reminder that access and opportunity change outcomes.
“Purpose doesn’t age—it evolves through the lives we touch.”
Why These Courts Matter
- Youth Pathways: Safe, structured spaces help our kids learn focus, teamwork, and confidence.
- Community Health: Public courts mean more movement, more connection, and more joy.
- Legacy in Action: Every serve and rally honors Judge Capers’ lifelong fight for equity and access.
To everyone who poured time, resources, and heart into this project—thank you. Let’s keep showing up for our neighborhoods, investing in our youth, and living out the values Judge Capers stood for.

My Commitment
I’m committed to continuing this work—expanding access to recreation, investing in youth programming, and celebrating the leaders who paved the way. Judge Capers showed us what courage looks like in public service. It’s on all of us to carry that torch forward.
See you on the courts. 🟣🟡
